VAST COURSE
A three-day program focusing on the core aspects that promote provision of safe anaesthesia and peri-operative care. Predominantly using simulation, the course centres on anaesthesia and resuscitation for obstetrics, paediatrics and trauma as well as safe general surgery, pre- and post-operative care, with an underlining focus on non-technical skills. Targeted case-based discussions and skills stations further explore non-technical skills, trauma primary survey, difficult airway management, neonatal resuscitation, pain management and complex decision making.
A graduate of the VAST Course will be able to:
- Recognise key non-technical skills applicable to anaesthesia
- Demonstrate a systematic approach to patient assessment
- Plan and prepare prior to delivery of anaesthesia
- Utilise a systematic approach to managing the unwell patient
- Communicate effectively for optimal team function
Prerequisites:
- Background in anaesthesia, nursing, surgery or medicine
- Completion of pre-reading and pre-course quiz
VAST Facilitator Course
The Facilitator Course is a two-day introduction to simulation education, including the conduct and debriefing of VAST simulation scenarios. Facilitator course graduates will be mentored in delivering future VAST Courses to help consolidate new skills. This model promotes ongoing course delivery and fosters program sustainability. Skills learned in the facilitator course are transferable and broadly applicable to health professional education.
Prerequisites: Completion of pre-reading and pre-course quiz
VAST Instructor Course
The VAST Instructor course is a 3-day program with the goal of providing participants with tools to:
- Direct VAST Courses (VAST)
- Teach VAST Facilitator Courses (VAST FC)
- Implement VAST in a new region or country
Prerequisites: Pre-course reading
VAST FOUNDATION YEAR
The VAST Foundation Year (FY) expands upon the foundations established in the VAST Course and provides a year-long curriculum for ongoing simulation-based training. If there is established anaesthesia training occurring in a region, there is value in implementing the VAST FY as a supplement to the VAST Course and VAST FC. Potential benefits are:
- Longitudinal delivery of simulation-based education for anaesthesia trainees
- Development and application of new skills over time
- Building experience and confidence with simulation-based medical education for both facilitators and learners
